Any discussion of the tail and the dog is missing the bigger picture. The tail does not wag the dog, by the way, it is only a useful proxy for plausible deniability. Everything the tail does is backed and controlled by the dog.

The bigger picture is that this war is not about Iran nor the Middle East at all. It's about the US Empire surrounding and containing China. And in this regard the US is doing well, causing chaos, cutting China off from oil, over-extending both China and Russia in defending themselves and accelerating the climate crisis which will affect the global south first and worst. So in actual fact, the US is succeeding at every step. And fooling even astute observers like Jonathan that this is about 'Greater Israel'.

What if none of this is actually, at root, Geopolitical? What if all the column inches dedicated to looking at this are, unwittingly, adding to the geopolitical piñatas we flock to to beat up, analyse, debate etc are simply the pantomime distraction?

Money moves things in our global society in a way absolutely nothing else does - not even the nukes. And a simple look at share prices from a couple of months before the war to now reveals massive profit. Sure, there are geopolitical tensions - and they can roar and huff and puff and move cash around at will, as long as that does not endanger the one golden rule. Wealth must go up, and everything else must be subservient to that.

A simple thought experiment should suffice - if Israel were calling the shots, then we’d have a degree of confidence to suggest that if they actually called for peace with Iran, then it would happen. How many of us believe that for a single second?

Iran has committed the ultimate sin - it has dared to build a society that does not subscribe to the one golden rule of wealth upwards. And that cannot be tolerated - so both attack dogs are unleashed to quell such impudence. And of course, ensure massive upwards flow of wealth as a result. In that light, the tail/dog question is just an analytical dead end that leads us off target and beating up on the political piñatas - precisely their primary function within our societal system. Keep us away from pulling back the curtain.

The US has not been a functioning democracy - a real country - for several decades now. The people living in the US haven't controlled it in all that time. It is an oligarchy:

https://archive.org/details/gilens_and_page_2014_-testing_theories_of_american_politics.doc

Who controls the US? The same zionist oligarchy that controls the zionist death machine with no borders called "israel".

Great article, Jonathan - thanks. Coincidentally, I read another article on the same topic a couple of days ago written by Professor Richard E Rubenstein, published by Counterpunch on 27 March. Also a very interesting article. Rubenstein's contention unequivocally is that the tail (Israel) does not wag the dog (the USA), basing his argument on an analysis and understanding of imperialism. If you get a chance to read it, I'd be interested in your view. That said, you provide a cogent argument for dog wagging the tail.

What if we add to the Deep State of the bureaucracy and the military-industrial complex the Epstein class. If we did then it might make it easier to see the military industrial complex (R&D done in Israel) and deep state to be a mirror of the visible controlling Zionist ideology which, while stationed in Israel, for now, is likely a cabal of transnational oligarchs beholden to no nation and out to perfect surveillance and make money as usual through war, destruction and death.

An excellent overview of the situation in the United States...........and the complex interweavings between America, the Israeli Lobby and the state of Israel.

As someone looking in from almost the outside, I'm Canadian, I only feel the need to add one thing:

Indifference to the genocide in Gaza, a willingness to look away not only from Israel's carpet bombing, but from America's persistent willingness to penalize Palestinian supporters and label opposition to genocide as "Anti-Semitism"...........says something about American society and culture.............that won't be easy to live down or sanitize in any way.

Even now, with the illegal war in Iran going badly..........American's concern about the price of gas and general unaffordability seems to be the average person's main worry.

With or without Israel, America is a War Economy.........war is how American's flex their patriotic muscle. War movies made in Hollywood are supervised by the Pentagon to make sure propaganda is the meaning and the message. America is a Violent Empire........and right now, America's violence addiction is still fueling this latest, and most stupid of America's wars.

Israel might have influence, but from where I sit, it doesn't take much to convince the average American to start waving the flag and rendering the innocent deaths of children elsewhere, invisible. Support for Iran is likely increasing world wide.....

But much of that likely comes from a lifetime, for most citizens of planet earth, watching imperial Amerikkka trample the rights and lives of others into the blood soaked mud of one more American 'excursion' into other people's territory.

Cuba is next, says your President.........may God have no mercy on his soul....if, that is, he has one.

I wish MLK was still around. He'd have choice words about the state of the President's soul. Meanwhile, the citizens of Cuba are cornered and may have an experience similar to the suffering of the people of Gaza. The unfairness of their situation is enough to make anyone question the idea of a just god.

"Any politician who disobeyed “risked being tagged as ‘anti-Israel’ (and possibly anti-Semitic) and confronted with a well-funded opponent in the next election”. "

Any American politician that votes pro Israel 99% of the time gets the same treatment. There are literally hundreds of examples.

Paul Findley's book "They Dare To Speak Out" was published years ago. Still people don't get it. That tells you how powerful the Zionist lobby is.

"One side believes Israel lured Trump into a trap from which he cannot extricate himself. The tail is wagging the dog.

The other believes that the US, as the world’s sole military super-power, is the one that writes the geo-strategic script. If Israel acts, it is only because it serves Washington’s interests as well. The dog is wagging the tail."

This is it in a nut shell.

Bushrod Lake's avatar

Who wags what is an easy question. Washington gets to keep the E. Files repressed (jail time for Rump) which are most certainly in the possession of Mossad, and Israel gets to destroy the only military competent competitor in the M.E. says the sadist Jake Sullivan. What a bunch of dangerous, self dealing, nuclear armed psychopaths! Its even money if we survive, IMO.

Thanks Jonathan! See also Moshé Machover here

https://weeklyworker.co.uk/worker/1573/the-dog-and-the-tail/

"What part of capital actually has influence on US policy on the Middle East? We know it from the horse’s mouth: the military-industrial complex. President Dwight D Eisenhower’s parting address to the nation in 1961 warned that the military-industrial complex has “unwarranted influence” on policy and must be stopped (in connection with the Middle East, I would add oil corporations). It is corporations, not individual capitalists, that exert hidden influence on policy and there is plenty of evidence that the military-industrial complex has a stake in Israel. Sheldon Adelson may not have had a material stake, but this section of US capital does and Israel is strongly integrated with it."

Brian Robinson's avatar

Further to the above, from Machover:

That is not altogether wrong, but the [Institute for Defense Analyses in Washington report dating from 1987] suggests a more meaningful understanding. The US and Israel are more like a very sophisticated high-tech partnership that collaborates on the frontiers of physics and other sciences in order to yield the gee-whiz weaponry that now defines modern warfare. Back in the 1980s, the two states were sharing and cross-pollinating their defence research at a very advanced level.

Today we have as a result the ‘electronic battlefield’ and many other awesome innovations:

▪ Tank commanders with small-screen maps that show where their adversaries are moving.

▪ Jet pilots who fire computer-guided bombs.

▪ Ships at sea that launch missiles over the horizon and hit targets 1,000 miles away ...

These experts were talking in the 1980s about technological challenges that were forerunners to the dazzling innovations that are now standard.

The Middle East wars became the live-fire testing ground, where new systems were perfected: “Scientists at Rafael [another Israeli centre] have come up with an ingenious way of using the properties of a glow discharge plasma to detect microwave and millimetre waves,” the report said. “The attractiveness of the project lies in the ability of the discharge to withstand nuclear weapons effects.”

This observation gave me a chill because the earnest defence scientists have yet to find a way for human beings to “withstand nuclear weapons effects”.

Brian Robinson's avatar

Finally, Machover's conclusion: "So my conclusion is that Israel will remain for the foreseeable future America’s top ally in the Middle East and will continue to make trouble regarding its relationship with Iran."

I'm a complete layman in these matters and know only what I read from Cook, Hedges, and a host of other independent writers and scholars and bloggers, Zionists, anti-Zionists, Marxists, Liberals, Uncle Tom Cobley and all, but it seems to me that the Marxist symbolic logician anti-Zionist emeritus prof is wrong here, at least in the first part of the above sentence. "Will continue to make trouble ..." is surely correct, but "America's top ally in the [area]"? Surely that's changing and with increasing rapidity by the day as we look?

Is the American empire now over-extended, as was (I'm told) the Roman one? Is it on the way out, as China rises ever more? The British century -- the American century -- is this becoming the Chinese century? And what then will Israel have to do with anything? I've no idea.

Thank you Jonathan for another excellent analysis of the manipulative power of the elite and their governments.

However banal, money is the common denominator once again. Israel through its support networks, buys congress, the senate, the presidency and his administration. In return the U.S. start and or support these wars that drive the military/industrial complex, ensure that oil and other essential minerals and commodities flow to the U.S. and its vassal states, ensure one salacious headline after the other for public consumption. The elite and super-elite are making prodigious profits and they’re happy. Israel gets to kill tens of thousands of people, steal their land, pretend they are the special ones and they’re happy. No prizes for guessing who is not making money.

According to Brown University, the post-9/11 wars have cost 4.5 to 4.7 million lives (directly and indirectly due to the consequences) to date. And the count is still rising.

Here in the Netherlands, our participation in these wars (Iraq, Afghanistan) was sold as being for 'peace and security'. The destruction of Gaza was defended by our politicians as Israel's 'right to self-defense'. The narrative regarding the war in Iran also shifted almost immediately from illegality to the malevolent regime.

It is often argued that Europe plays no meaningful geopolitical role, but I believe the complicity lies primarily in approval through silence. One could argue that energy dependencies and security interests play a role in the conflict in Ukraine, but ideologically there has long been much common ground.

An important change is that we have shifted from embedded journalists in the Iraq war to citizen journalism via social media. The narrative regarding 'peace and security' or 'right to self-defense' appears to increasingly conflict with and be untenable compared to how that reality enters directly and unmediatedly (apart from algorithmic editing).

The question is perhaps whether the narrative will change in such a way that the images will fit within it, or whether the images will initiate an open discussion about that reality. Much damage has been done by good intentions.

OWN IT USA

The USA owns the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the West Bank.

The USA regulates and owns its lobbies - the USA OWNS its Supreme Court that recognizes money as democratic people.

This frame represents the capitalist hill of quintessential USAism. The USA owns the White House and its Congress. It owns elections, the two-option political parties, democracy think tanks, its war profiteers, corporate plunders, and organizations. It owns its intelligence, media and sophisticated propaganda system. It owns its universities and schools. It owns its history. It owns the unfathomable immunity for Epstein sex trafficking funder and participants.

It owns its Zionist state. It owns its proxy war and terror agents. It owns the Vietnam and Ukraine Wars. It own the phony Warren Commission, the phony un-retracted 9/11 Commission Report. It owns the masses of people who ride the system and don’t care. It own the bail out and shut down of Occupy Wall Street. The USA owns sabotage and collapse within to bring workers and the middle class into third world order.

THE USA owns the Israel fake state. The USA owns the two unlawful unprovoked wars Iran.

>>> The USA owns the Palestinian genocide.

USA APOLOGISTS et al QUIT BLAMING OTHERs - OWN YOUR SHIT. And quit blaming the U.S. Government. In a democracy the buck stops with the voters and people. Or are the bulk of 300 million USA people so brain dead as to cry democracy to the world while being shafted?

It’s USA, the 250 year old republican system made manifest by white male Christian racist revolutionaries.

The pathological constitution (essence or character) of the USA wasn’t changed in 1954 with the formation of the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs — now American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, AIPAC. The USA invited this and the many other entities of Israeli interest — individuals like Rupert Murdoch. They were knowingly structured as Zionist pillars into the USA capitalist corporate/state.

For a country [the USA] that maintains imperial operations of international decapitations, invasions, interferences and regime changes and has these down to a compulsive art upon so called sovereign nations — ally and non-ally alike — and for a country whose own soverignity and national security is abundantly (obscenely) resourced, cherished and perpetually guarded border to border, well beyond the means or will of most every other nation, it’s inarguable that the USA is Top Gun and Top Dog.

Bragging about USA’s shining virtue, bravery, economic/military power, grandiosity, exceptionalism… while crying “”Poor poor victim”” of Israel sounds horribly like the trait of childish Jews. It’s not just Congress members who have assimilated to Jewish character.

Since October 8, 2023, I thought bombing school girls was an archetype of Israeli psychopathic military campaigns. Turns out now that it’s the USA that attacks Iran unprovoked and enters with world witness in an “excursion” (commonly known in the USA as the Epstein War) by launching a tomahawk missile, targeting and murdering 180 primary school girls.

I tell ya Johnathan Cook: I understand the rabies this viscous dog has with a sick brain, an infested body and diseased tail. We put such dogs to sleep or they die a hard death alone.

I’ll also note that I appreciate your grappling with the dog tail issue but the evil-in-one argument is a watered down abrogation of USA’s position as genocidal war criminal and provocateur in-chief. If you want us to look at the big picture, how about looking at the history of the USA before Israel was even a made-up fake state? I don’t even know why we designate nations and daylight or lack between them since the USA has by now obliterated International Law, the Geneva Convention, international courts, US Domestic Law and national sovereignties.

USA people don’t get off the ethical and lawful hook. They are culpable. Babyboomers and generations made up of masses of obese, lazy, proud and violent persons indoctrinated by a garish flag from kindergarten (where kids actually learn hopelessness) have been sucking on the gravy train of the unscrupulous petro-dollar — a gravy train where fake state Israel is THE key element in the world’s oil region and gullible Jews and Christians feasting on the books of neurotic Moses with stories of Amalek conveniently became mass blocks of useful idiots, the populous tools for sociopathic Western Zionist operations over the past century.

The hand of the Abrahamic religions (Jewish and Christian mass cults and Arab Gulf State cults redirected to USA interest) fit perfectly into the Zionist glove. The Zionist glove is the same cloth as the torn nazi gloves. It’s then found that the covert murderous hand of Zionism fits comfortably into the USA imperial glove left all but vacant of Colonialism, slavery and segregation that once filled it and made America “”great””.

The global truma/shock of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki holocaust was not Israel’s doing. The contrivance of the global PetroDollar was not Israel’s doing or any other foreign entity. The invasion and current occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom was not / is not Israel’s doing nor any other foreign entity. Slavery and the colonization of Natives across America was not any other country’s doing. The inexhaustible cruelty and crimes of the USA since day one is its existential small “c” constitution. That’s what it IS. That’s what its temporal power and wealth development stands on, limps around on, but it’s a genocidal monster just like WWII Germany.
