I find it rather fascinating how the pro-Israel commentators have a view of the history in this region which starts on 7 October 2023 and ignores the long-standing and ongoing oppression, murder and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians from their land. The oppressed have a right, yes a right, to oppose and fight their own oppression. It's a lesson we learned from the brave Jewish fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto who by the way, were labelled 'terrorists' by the Nazis. Imagine of we blamed the Jewish anti-Nazi resistance in Poland for the destruction the Nazis rained down on them? We'd be labelled anti-semites. It's pure victim blaming.

I do not agree with prior comments to this article faulting Hamas for the current violence waged by Israel. Israeli attacks on Palestinians had been accelerating. Israeli plans for occupying Gaza are hardly a secret and have been made crystal clear over the past decade.

Sadly, in North America there is little sympathy for the Palestinian cause. The standard trope expressed, "Why don't the Arab countries take in Palestinian refugees?" is pervasive. I reply with this rhetorical question, "Why did not the far wealthier European countries provide a state for Holocaust survivors in Europe?" That question does provoke a period of silence ...
