I am a 77 year old Jewish woman and was at the demonstration in support of the hunger strikers outside the Ministry of Justice on 17th December, along with IJAN (International Jewish ant Zionist Network), Jewish Voice for Liberation and the Holocaust Survivors and Descendants group. It was a smallish crowd (250?) with about 100 police officers surrounding the crowd and blocking the street at both ends. I watched two officers on the edge of the crowd wielding cameras on stalks angled towards the middle of the crowd. Then suddenly we were kettled and some officers stormed into the centre and dragged someone out. There was no way they could have heard an individual shouting ‘Globalise the Intifada’ and besides, on all the many marches I’ve been on that isn’t something I’ve heard chanted. Clearly, they had decided beforehand to make arrests no matter what and on these spurious grounds. Or perhaps it was at the encouragement of the two women with sophisticated camera equipment who were roaming the crowd sticking their cameras in our faces and accompanied by a large man in combat jacket wearing a mask and dark glasses?
Interestingly, on R4 news at 10 that night this small demo was headline news in contrast to the failure to report on the massive monthly marches - only it was reported as a ‘pro Palestine’ demonstration, nothing about the hunger strikers in keeping with the general news blackout on this. And then the usual suspects were wheeled out: the Chief Rabbi and the BOD and it was all connected to Bondi beach killings. I despair…
As sad as the Bondi incident was, I have become somewhat hardened to the tragic, needless death of innocent men, women, and children after watching >2 years of the trapped people of Gaza and now the West Bank being slaughtered like animals by the military of the power trying to take all their homeland. When the real death toll from Palestine is discovered, and it exceeds 200,000 people will reel in horror.
