I've given up trying to stop myself succumbing to a mix of cynicism and nihilism. It's terrible and I don't like it but they seem justified to me. The things I can't and don't want to do are stopping reading, and watching AlJazeera news. It's had another weird effect on me tho'. After many decades away from Jewish religion stuff, I've gone back to read about the Old Testament Prophets, principally through the brilliant books of the late Marc Ellis, quite a good iteration himself of a Hebrew Bible appalled and disgusted and very angry prophet, castigating, excoriating the people for their manifold iniquities. Ellis says the Jewish people will not be finally redeemed from both the ashes of the European Holocaust and from the genocide they're committing, or enabling, or being complicit in against the Palestinian people until they, the Jewish people, give their all to restituting justice, albeit so long delayed and inevitably so inadequate. Of course I don't think the Jews (by the way it's now the middle of the 10 Days of Penitence, "the Days of Awe" and in a few days the Day of Atonement itself) I don't believe the Jews could have wrought all this wickedness by themselves without the far too generous (and guilty?) help of the so-called great western powers and not least the Christian Zionists. But that's no excuse, no expiation, no redemption. We've had, over the past 80 years, something called "Holocaust Theology", how to reconcile wickedness with any kind of basic, hopeful meaning for the world, never mind the transcendent godstuff; what might such a thing as "Genocide Theology" look like? Probably nothing less than the establishing of a single state in Palestine for all its citizens of whatever ethnicity and religious affiliation.
