I know I should avoid trying to comment on this scholarly article for a host of reasons but I can't stop myself. I've been (with ICAHD) on two study tours of Palestine (2003, a general one, 2008 the clinicians' tour) and I met and listened to Jews, Muslims and Christians, including some well known and distinguished representatives of that last.
I start from the position that political Zionism was a tragic and disastrous mistake. But to what was it a response? The original anti-Jewism, I'm told, was religious. After the ministry of the Christ on Earth, there weren't supposed to be any Jews left. The fact that there stubbornly persisted to be people practising the old religion was, for many following the New Testament, something of a running sore.
Thanks to the great historian Avi Shlaim, I now know that Zionism "was a western thing", and "nothing to do with us", "us" meaning Arabic Jews like himself, originally from Iraq, who historically had very good relations with their non-Jewish Arab neighbours (they spoke Arabic in their homes, their food was Arabic and so on).

I am Scottish and support the Palestinians and other countries,around the world which suffer under the domination of a foreign power, eg Cuba and much of South and Central America, as do most Scots because we have suffered genocide, persecution, eroding of our culture, languages,snd history atvthe hands of our English occupiers since 1707, wnen they imposed annexation under the giuse of a false treaty creating the fake state of a United Kingdom of Great Britain in order to justify their expansion and colonisation around the globe - North America, the Caribbean, India and Pakistan, east abd,West Africe abd,Islands in the S,Pacific.
Most are now free, though often tied to England/Britain though trade and the influence of local elites who benefited from helping the foreign overlords.
Scotland is one of the last annexed territories, along with Wales and we are trying to regain our freedom to escape the unjust austerity imposed on us, the continuing plunder of our resources, particularly energy, and the loss of our voice internationally.
However, an end is in sight. We,are opposing the laws against Palestine Action as not valid in Scotland, as we did not vote for them and Scots Law,was intended to be protected under terms of the 'Union'.
We are also appealing to the UN to be recognised as a non-self- governing territory (contrary to the lie told by Britain to the UN in the 50s that we were in a voluntary union, and this initiative is gradually gaining support from the international community, particularly from nations that are former colonies.
However more support would be welcome as we,have no voice to explain our situation which is why I am using this forum to highlight it. We,are a peaceful nation abd do jot wish to be involved in wars, whether 'legal' or not by England, which dominates our Parliament and our media.

Too many institutional monotheists create their Creator’s nature in their own fallible and often angry, vengeful image. Really, if the Divine is as vengefully angry, even blood-thirsty, as He is generally portrayed, is anyone — including supposed ardent followers or conservative believers — truly safe or really ‘saved’? It could be theorized He’d be especially peeved by those self-professed Godly believers that He had (likely rightfully) deemed as fake or frauds.
Followers of Judaism and Islam generally believe that Jesus did exist but was not a divine being, albeit Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet. The way those faiths generally see it is: How could any divine being place himself/itself down to the level of humans (and even lower, by some other standards)? And, in particular, how could any divine being not be a physical conqueror — far less allow himself to be publicly humiliated while slowly beaten to death?
The nature and teachings of Jesus even left John the Baptist, who believed in him as the savior, bewildered by his apparently contradictory version of the Hebraic messiah, with which John had been raised. Perhaps most perplexing was the Biblical Jesus’ revolutionary teaching of non-violently offering the other cheek as the proper response to being physically assaulted by one’s enemy. The Biblical Jesus also most profoundly washed his disciples’ feet, the act clearly revealing that he took corporeal form to serve.
Many ‘Christians’ likely even find inconvenient, if not plainly annoying, trying to reconcile the conspicuous inconsistency in the fundamental nature of the New Testament’s Jesus with the wrathful, vengeful and even jealous nature of the Old Testament’s God. But for many of us, Godly greatness need not be defined as the ability to destroy and harshly punish, as opposed to the willingness and compacity for compassionate forgiveness, non-violence and humility.
[BTW: Though I use the capitalized pronouns He/Him/His, I don't actually perceive the divine as being in singular humanoid form, let alone with gender; nor needing or desiring to be worshipped (or even thanked for our meals) — which, at least to me, are much more traits of frail, shallow human nature.]

I've long been, and still am, vocally critical of the clear decades-long maltreatment of and large-scale violence against (to put it mildly) the general Palestinian populace by the Israeli government and security/defense agencies. But I was pleasantly surprised at reading the cutline below the large photo accompanying a June 26, 2025 story (headlined “UK’s largest Jewish group punishes members who broke silence on Gaza genocide”) posted on the Middle East Monitor’s website:

It really must be difficult for decent Jews/Semites with such a strong conscience when they publicly denounce Israel’s atrocities and are then denounced and referred to as “self-hating” by the extreme-Zionism powers, likely in large part to try shaming them into self-censoring.
They may see that all lives and needless suffering should matter to us all, yet that’s much easier for a conscience to dismiss when one considers another an innately lower lifeform who also looks different.
