Winter in Gaza is harsh, and life feels heavier with every cold night. I sit in a small room with my children, trying to protect them from a world that offers very little safety. Hala is only two years old, and Karim is just five months old. The room is cold, the walls are thin, and fear often feels closer than warmth.
Recently, I visited my cousin who was injured and lying in a hospital bed. Seeing him like that broke my heart. I felt helpless and deeply sad, wishing I could take his pain away, but all I could do was stand there and pray for him.
Today was especially difficult. Gunfire erupted from quadcopter drones, filling the air with terror. Hala was terrified—she clung to me, shaking, and said, “I don’t want to die, Dad. I’m so scared.” Her words shattered my heart 💔. Karim began crying uncontrollably, sensing the fear around him. We huddled together in the far corner of the room, trying to make ourselves small, knowing that a random bullet or mistake could take one of us away at any moment.
What many people don’t know is that when gunfire starts, we cannot move or flee. We live only a very short distance from the yellow line, the dividing line between us and them. All the houses in front of us have already been destroyed, leaving us exposed with nowhere to run.
Later, I had to walk a very long distance just to buy drinking water. The cold was extreme, and the wind cut through my body, but water is a necessity—we endure because we have no other choice.
Now, a strong winter storm is approaching, and my heart is full of worry. Karim is already sick, and I fear the cold will worsen his condition. In Gaza, winter is not just a season—it is another battle for survival, especially for children who deserve warmth, safety, and peace.
Despite everything, I want to take a moment to wish my friends a Merry Christmas. I hope this season brings you warmth, love, and peace. Far from the pain we live with every day, I wish you moments of light and humanity.
