Are you saying that the self-proclaimed secularist Swiss Jewish journalist, Theodor Herzl, was either a conspirator with, or merely a dupe of the earliest Christian Zionists?

My understanding is that Zionism, tied specifically to Judaism, was first established as a political organization, in 1897, by Theodor Herzl.

Perhaps you are conflating the earlier “sordid origins” – the colonial supremacist attitudes of British Christian Zionism of “nearly two centuries ago”, with the religiously persecuted Jews of that time, first turning to an ideology of Jewish religiopolitical nationalism; only established in the late nineteenth century.

Given that (Zion is a place name in the Hebrew Bible used as a synonym for Jerusalem as well as for the Land of Israel as a whole. The name is found in 2 Samuel, one of the books of the Hebrew Bible dated to before or close to the mid-6th century BCE. - Wikipedia) and that Christianity has its roots in the ‘Old Testament’, where Jerusalem (Zion) features so prominently, that Christians too placed such significance on the place; ergo Christian Zionism!

In their newfound, blind-faith Christian zeal, they decided to make of the Jews, their scapegoat. Perhaps the Jews of Israel today, who now have all the power, like the British before them, they are just following suit in their persecution of the Palestinian people!

One would think, if the Jewish religionists of the State of Israel were, in fact, the biblically ‘chosen’ (today it’s the Americans who see themselves as the ‘exceptions”) they’d be capable of seeing the light after a century, rather than the 200 years it has taken the British supremacists, just to begin to recognize, perhaps, they too, are not any more 'chosen' than any ‘others’, and begin to act accordingly, by taking a different tack, leading by a more righteous example.

For too many years, having been witness to man’s inhumanity to man, I’m not keeping my fingers crossed for either of the parties to evolve more consciously.

Am I the only cynic?
