"The fighting, and killing, could continue indefinitely". Not really.

Narrative Collapse - - -

Only when the last American artillery shell has been fired in The Ukraine, only when the last Ukrainian soldier has been killed in The Ukraine and only when the last of Ukrainian state territory has been irretrievably lost from The Ukraine will The Americans and Europeans finally realize that God Favours Russia . . .

I like your writing. Usually.

But you have bought into a narrative largely spread by Russian disinformation. It has some truths, but is mostly false.

Russia invaded Ukraine because they do not accept the existence of Ukraine as a separate nation. Ukraine was a colony of the Tsardom of Russia, later renamed Russia, for over 300 years. They finally broke free. Putin's world view will not accept that "Little Russians" can do without "Great Russians'.

This can be somewhat thought of as the Relationship between Ireland and England. You can make some parallels between the Donbas and Northern Ireland. Crimea is a whole 'nother area, much too complex for a sentence or two. (look up history of the Crimean Khanate) . Suffice it to say it has more to do with Russian Imperialism and Black Sea ports than anything remotely approaching Russian Nationhood.

Putin has declared an ongoing "war" with the liberal, secular West because the West exists.

You have the Fascists backwards. Russia has evolved to a full blown Fascist State run by a nexus of Oligarchs, organized Crime, and the FSB.

To understand Russia today, it must be understood that it is not a Government in the modern sense, but rather an organized crime syndicate.

Putin is a strong Russian Nationalist. He is NOT a Russian Patriot. His association of Russia as a strong Imperium to be revived is to reflect upon himself. A "greater Russian Empire", a bulwark against the depravities of Western Democracy, Liberalism, and inclusiveness is for his ego and personal glory. It has nothing to do with making Russia a better home for it's people. (does the USA 2107 to 2020 sound similar)

Lots more, but , again, you have this wrong.

Excellent review of the origins of the conflict, even if absent is mention of the intercepted phone conversation between U.S. officials discussing midwifing the 2014 coup. Link is below.

Also, if I may offer a minor correction: Russia has more than one naval warm-water port. Sevastopol is Russia's only major naval warm-water port. But Russia also has modest, by scale, warm-water naval bases in Tartus on the Syrian coast and Kaliningrad on the Baltic coast. Also, ice breakers make its naval ports at St. Petersburg on the Baltic and Vladivostok on the Pacific operational year-round.

My blood started to boil reading the NATO press release from June 2021 linked in your article. Thank you for your scrupulous scholarship revealing the elaborate official deceptions in this proxy war waged by the US against Russia.

An excellent review of the events leading to the war and the current situation in Ukraine. It is very disappointed that we do not read this correct analysis in the corporate media. The NYT and other corporate media are acting as propaganda outlets for Ukraine and the US security state. Large parts of US and European population are being brainwashed to believe the propaganda being delivered by the corporate media concerning the Ukraine war.

WHEW! This seems a more balanced view than some I have read. I have been following Jonathan Cook for awhile and trust what he has to say. OMG. Is there any hope anywhere?

The UK, Royalty, and USA exceptionalism need to be trashed into the dust bin of history....Now.

We need another Jan 6th. 2021 to delete our current members of Congress, our elitist conceived constitition and our current servalience state here and abroad. The far right and left see eye to eye on many issues; it's the centrist that are mucking everything up. Off with their heads storm the bastille.

Exactly. Now what can we do? I think this is what we need, and we could negotiate for it as the peace settlement if the people of the world got behind it. https://globalsolutions.org/federation/

Excellent analysis, but Russia's invasion I don't believe was illegal. Putin followed strict protocol much to the chagrin of the more hawkish in the Kremlin. He recognised the Republics who then requested intervention (allowed under international law, whatever that is these days). Something he had delayed for years. In fact he was even against the initial referendum for them to declare autonomy within Ukraine (and remain part of Ukraine; the Donbas was always Russian but Lenin made a concession to the Ukrainian Communists as they had no industry)

Putin's SMO was just that and it seemed to work with Zelensky brought to the table in Turkey as early as March (He knew Ukraine had lost within the first 48 hours). Johnson put paid to that though so the war must go on. The Russian strategy has been nothing short of miraculous with 80,000 troops taking on an army of 600,000. But as Ukraine will not return to the table it must die and die it is. The fact that Macron and Biden are resorting to sending Bradleys and AMXs illustrates the desperation. Soledar and Bakhmut might trigger the domino collapse for Ukraine no matter how many Poles get involved.

21st Century PEACE that should have been...

BUT for pro-WAR U$/UK War-Criminals HYPOCRITICALLY calling pro-NATO Putin 'a threat'?

In September 2022, during the 7th month of the Ukraine War, interviewed by Channel 4 about his nine meetings with Vladimir Putin, ex-NATO Head Robertson said, "At the first meeting (in Moscow, Oct 2001) Vladimir Putin clearly said, 'I WANT RUSSIA TO BE PART OF WESTERN EUROPE...at the 2nd meeting (in Brussels) he said..'WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO INVITE RUSSIA TO (apply to) JOIN NATO?'...I started to sort of reach out and engage them in so many activities that they basically couldn't fight with us.. but after I left NATO (in Dec 2003), the American administration, the Bush administration (DURING THEIR OWN ILLEGAL WAR ON IRAQ opposed by Putin), lost any interest basically in doing business with Russia, they saw it as a threat..they didn't really want to make it part of the overall partnership (for Peace). I think we missed an opportunity at that time because I think it's what he (Putin) wanted, and we could have grabbed hold of him!"

Feb 2022, quote formerly pro-NATO Putin rightly stating before wrongly invading, "De-Nazify Ukraine."

I want the U.S. elite's plans for a unipolar world run by the West to fail. It is against the interests of the vast majority of the world's people imo.

Putin still should not have invaded Ukraine.

But I argued on social media last year that the west was not innocent in provoking the action.

The mainstream narrative will always tell of a democracy and freedom loving Western (American) values fighting against tyranny. The history of post war interventions, removal of democratically elected leaders, the installing of fascist dictatorships, proxy wars and even overt illegal wars is always left out of the telling.

Thank you Jonathan for your voice of dissent against establishment dishonesty.

Cook provides a faultless historical analysis in respect of which we have a responsibility to employ the most obstinate stance in the persistence of memory in order that the context underlying this debacle is never allowed to be erased. And it is the mendacious drive to extinguish this context that forms the bedrock upon which the virtuous and innocent West seeks to further its immaculate deception. This is the biggest lie ever perpetrated and must be exposed as widely as possible before these white supremacist sociopaths fulfil their dream of turning the entire world into one vast detention camp held in bondage to their doctrine, the first commandment of which is “Thou shalt not be free”

A great start done fluidly & accurately to identify the imperial global round table oligarks path of deception, pain & destruction .

Further advancement of western intent to dominate rather than negotiate, seen in encirclement of Russia & China with it's full arsenal of lies & deciept to include biowheapons & the upcoming Pandemic WHO Treaty for global dominance.

Finding ourselves in the deep water in which we sink or swim
