Thank you Jonathan. It is deeply disturbing, but not surprising. Neoliberalism and democracy are fundamentally incompatible. A neoliberal, tooth-and-claw vision for human society needs authoritarianism. We are living through a dark age already. But I do not blame the predators among us. No despot can do anything on their own. They need armies of collaborators, who are often among the most educated and highly decorated in society. We all have a role to play in this. As long as people believe that educated people are also automatically ethical, and enlightened, and as long as they think they do not have a say because people in power know better, we will continue to perpetuate the patterns humanity has always repeated. There is nothing new under the sun, but there is also nothing stopping us from changing direction. If people feel as awful as me about the Guardian for example, they need to boycott it. Having allowed ourselves to become ‘consumers’ and ‘economic units’, we can use that to exercise power. What passes as journalism these days feeds off our attention. It is easy to starve it of our attention. Thanks as always for writing the truth and so clearly too.
